Toronto schools giving the gift of hope to families who need it most

Behind every hamper is a family, and a story that matters

The Hamper Hub is a community network of Toronto District School Board social workers, participating school staff and parent volunteers who come together each holiday season to support families in need

The families are paired with classrooms or student groups of a similar age, who collect donations based on the family’s profile. The hampers are thoughtfully assembled to meet each family member’s needs, then are picked up by social workers and delivered to the families just before the holidays

Social workers create detailed profiles of struggling TDSB families, sharing their stories and hardships, and compiling a personalized holiday wish list which addresses the needs of each family member.

Every hamper is personal, because every family is unique

By sharing each family’s story, the profiles transform the experience of assembling a hamper into a meaningful act of connection and care, it becomes far more significant than simply tossing a toy in a donation bin.

Holiday Hampers aren’t just about donating items — they’re about bringing joy and hope to a family who truly needs it

By learning about the challenges these families face, students form genuine connections that inspire compassion and showcase the power of community.

Holiday Hampers offer a wonderful opportunity to teach children the true spirit of giving during the holiday season.

Parents and teachers are encouraged to actively involve students in meaningful discussions about the family they’re supporting — who they are, their circumstances and needs, and how much of a positive impact their actions can make.
