Connecting Toronto schools with families in need of support

The Hamper Hub is a community network of Toronto District School Board social workers, participating school staff and parent volunteers who come together each holiday season to support families in need.

Social workers create detailed profiles of struggling families within the TDSB community, sharing their stories and hardships. They also compile a personalized holiday wish list for addressing the needs of each family member.

The families are paired with a classroom or student group of a similar age, who collect donations based on the family’s profile. The hampers are thoughtfully assembled to meet each family member’s needs, then are picked up by social workers and delivered to the families just before the holiday break.

Personalization makes our program unique

By sharing each family’s story, the profiles transform the experience of assembling a hamper into a meaningful act of connection and care, far more profound than simply tossing a toy in a donation bin. It’s no longer just about donating an item — it’s about bringing joy and hope to a family who truly needs it

You cannot see how impactful and meaningful these gifts are to our families; how often they are the only gifts some families receive, or see how overcome parents are with relief and gratitude. I am so thankful for your generosity and thoughtfulness as I joyously deliver on your behalf

Toronto is the child poverty capital of Canada

More than one in ten Torontonians rely on food banks, with 2024 data from Daily Bread Food Bank showing 3.49 million client visits, 23% are children and youth.

There is an urgent need for support

Many recipient families face significant challenges, often struggling to afford basic essentials such as food and warm clothing for their children.

The hampers provide both hope and meaningful support. The presents inside are often the only ones their children will receive, and the grocery gift cards make it possible for them to share a special holiday meal together.

Holiday Hampers build a true sense of community

The program brings Toronto schoolchildren together to help other Toronto schoolchildren — creating a circle of kindness and empathy

By learning about the challenges these families face, students form genuine connections that inspire compassion and showcase the power of community.

Give back this holiday season

Holiday Hampers offer a wonderful opportunity to teach children the true spirit of giving during the holiday season.

Parents and teachers are encouraged to actively involve students in meaningful discussions about the family they’re supporting — who they are, their circumstances and needs, and how much of a positive impact their actions can make.
